Big news that hit this week is that the Nintendo Switch surpassed the PlayStation 4 in sales in Japan despite the PlayStation 4 being out for three years before the Nintendo Switch and Japan being the home turf of both systems. Woopididooo! Am I the only one that does not see this as a big deal?
The PlayStation 4 is a home console and that’s it. As a console system it is great do not get me wrong, but it is not as versatile as the Nintendo Switch which is a hybrid handheld / home console. This is by no means a “bash the PS4 type post” just that you cannot compare the two systems because the Switch is as much a handheld as it is a home console.
Japan has always dominated the handheld sales market, as you can see below, so it would be no surprise that the Nintendo Switch would out sell any home console regardless of who the manufacturer is. The Nintendo DS, Nintendo Gameboy, Nintendo 3DS and their variants have all done this throughout time. Not sure why it’s a surprise now that the Japanese market likes to game on the go as well as while in group settings where local wireless play is a big deal.

It will be interesting to see how the rumored smaller more travel friendly Nintendo Switch is going to affect these sales if and when it sees the light of day. In any event as of two days ago in Japan, the PlayStation 4 had sold 8,077,756 while the Nintendo Switch had sold 8.125,637 in case you were wondering. I know I wasn’t….
