Sea of Thieves, the pirate-themed PVP adventure game from Microsoft Studios announced today that it has surpassed the significant milestone of having had 15 million unique players participate in the game since its launch.
Propelling the title to these new heights has been the games branching out beyond its origins as a title primarily purchased in the Microsoft Store and supplied as part of Xbox Game Pass services.
Considering the game launched just over two years ago (March of 2018), for an original title, this is a considerable achievement. In fact, the game has enjoyed a resurgence of late, posting a bigger count of players and more activity in the first six months of 2020 than it did during all of 2019. In June of 2020 alone, well over 3 million players logged in to play, setting an all-time record for logins to the game.
A significant chunk of the activity for 2020 can be attributed the release of the title in the Steam store, with over 1 million copies sold to date on Steam.
This has been such a busy year for Sea of Thieves that as of January of this year, 10 million people had played Sea of Thieves worldwide. It is a testament to the resurgent popularity of Thieves that in the last 6 months, an additional 50 percent was added to the total count of unique players in just 6 months.
Of course, the global pandemic may be a factor. Anecdotally, more people have more time on their hands due to quarantine efforts all over the globe. Are more people playing games in general right now, due to the excess of time they may have on their hands? This might certainly be a factor.
In Sea of Thieves, players group up to sail on one of several different sized ships to quest for look and complete missions to improve their standing with various guilds and groups. Players can also attempt to take plunder from other groups of players in game, while defending their own loot and ships from other players, and creatures as wide ranged and ghost pirates, great white sharks, and the dreaded kraken!
Sea of Thieves is regularly updated with new content, and features various in-game purchases to upgrade skins for things from clothing to weapons and other gear.
If you’ve never tried Sea of Thieves, the title is available from the Microsoft Store, Amazon, and it is also included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions. If you are a PC gamer, Sea of Thieves is also available for purchase and download digitally from the Steam store.
