In a galaxy far far away… In beautiful Anaheim California – Disneyland, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has opened to the public May 31, 2019 after 3 years of construction. Hoards of people have descended upon Disneyland to visit Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu to visit Oga’s Cantina, Savi’s Workshop to build their very own Lightsaber or the Droid Depot to design and build a droid of their own. Some visitors may also seek out the Milk Stand to try Luke Skywalker’s favorite blue or green milk.
While Batuu’s Black Spire Outpost is full of various food, drink and shops; many are going there only to leave again on the Millennium Falcon in the attraction Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. Theming at a Disney attraction is always exemplary so it’s no surprise that at the entrance to the attraction sits the Millennium Falcon awaiting it’s flight crew.
On Smugglers Run, Hondo Ohnaka is looking for a flight crew to take some hard-to-find items to particular clientele which is where you and your crew come in. Here you take control of the Millennium Falcon as one of the pilots, engineers or gunners and see if you can together succeed in your mission. In order to succeed the entire team of six guests must work together and communication is key! There are two pilots: One pilot controls up and down while the other controls left and right. The two gunners make sure to keep the ship safe by taking care of enemies while the two engineers keep the ship repaired or unleash a harpoon as needed. Smugglers Run at it’s simplest form is a mix between Epcot’s Mission Space (minus the spinning) and Star Tours.
While Smugglers Run is not a video game it still has many video game elements in the sense that you are in control of the Falcon and that you have to work cooperatively in order to complete your mission. Of course Disney didn’t give you full control so you can’t fly the Millennium Falcon off to Hoth, this is a struct linear rail type game that you have some input.
Early reviews are quite positive saying the level of immersion is incredible. The cockpit is full of details with plenty of lights and buttons to push. Walt Disney Imagineering teamed up with NVIDIA and Epic Games (Unreal Engine) and created a custom multi-GPU implementation of the Unreal Engine to support Smugglers Run. Even though that appears to be a mega-team of talent, some guests are complaining that they are able to see that they are looking at a screen and not out the cockpit’s windows into outer space.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is now open in Disneyland California with reservations needed through June 23rd. The Millennium Falcon will be landing at Batuu’s Black Spire Outpost in Walt Disney World on August 29th, 2019. At the time of this writing there is no word of a reservation system to enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when it opens but we are going to try to be there for the big opening in Florida.
SPOILER ALERT: If you’re ok with spoilers I included a POV video from TPMVids below. Don’t forget to check out their channel as well which includes some great Disney park videos.
