Sony is skipping E3 2020! Sony is pulling out for the second time in two years. With PlayStation 5 poised to launch holiday 2020, it’s hard to believe they would skip this media extravaganza. Is this a strategic marketing tactic or something else? A Sony representative told Gameindustry.biz, that they will “build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe.”
This may not be a bad thing. Instead of the major events, Sony plans to partake in many smaller events that are more “fan focused.” The Sony representative went on to say, “Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family…” and that they “look forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”
Is this the end of an era?
E3 has been changing over the years from primarily a media based event to a more fan friendly event. Some have said that E3 has lost its way from the premier gaming event of the year. The ESA released a statement, perhaps to right the shop that, “E3 is a signature event celebrating the video game industry and showcasing the people, brands and innovations redefining entertainment loved by billions of people around the world.” Sounds like the ESA is worried too.
PlayStation has been a huge cornerstone of E3 since 1995, and it is interesting that they will not be attending E3 2020. Is Sony afraid of a console E3 showdown against the Xbox Series X? Perhaps the next-gen consoles are so similar that bringing the console physically to the masses is a better marketing approach. With a name like PlayStation, would they need to do that? Would either of them need to?
The E3 2020 event is June 9 through June 11, 2020, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. For further details about the event, check out https://www.e3expo.com. Of course, keep an eye out at SuperCo-OpBros.com as well!
