Paper Mario: The Origami King is now available for the Nintendo Switch. You can read our announcement that includes some screenshots and the trailer here. After spending quite a few hours playing, I got a decent feel for the game. While I am in no way ready to give a full review of the title, I can give my first impression.
First thought right out of a cannon is that this game is a winner. I do want to point out, as many folks have been asking, that Paper Mario does not have coop play and is strictly a single player game. Graphically, Paper Mario is really a wonder and almost surprising that the Nintendo Switch can pump out a game this nice looking, despite many players doubting the Switch’s capabilities. Character animations, as well as the landscapes, are beautifully detailed and quite engaging as is the storyline. The storyline was quick to develop and, so far, has not dragged on, keeping us engaged.
Each character throughout has a wonderfully fun personality, coming alive, and feel as if they have personality allowing the player to connect with them. Paper Mario’s mildly corny humor made us laugh out loud on a number of occasions.
On the gameplay front, Mario’s special abilities are fun to use, especially with the motion controls, and immerse you deeper into the paper world. Controls are fairly simple with very little learning curve. The only early complaint I had was about the “Battle Waves,” which are where battles between mobs take place. They’ve grown on me so far, but I felt that the battle sequences often removed that immersive feel. As I mentioned, they are starting to grow on me, so more on that in our official Paper Mario: The Origami King review when it’s out.
As it stands right now, this title is definitely something you will want to get your hands on. Paper Mario: The Origami King is available now for $59.99 on the Nintendo Switch.
