How to find an Xbox Series X | S

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Xbox Series X | S pre-order availability was a complete mess this morning. Some folks got lucky and some didn’t which begins the hunt for the Xbox Series X | S for many. The methods below are what I have used in the past to secure hard-to-get items like video game consoles. Mileage may vary but this should help point in you in the right direction. I hope this guide helps you find an Xbox series X | S. Let us know how you make out!

  1. Check sites and social network marketplaces like eBay, Craigslist, and even Facebook’s Marketplace & local buy/sell groups. There are also apps like LetGo. These can be very good resources, but also could be somewhat problematic. Buying from a stranger online can introduce all sorts of problems like scams and price gouging. Take caution though, there is a LOT of price gouging going on right now with the limit of pre-orders being sold. Potential buyers also have to be on the lookout for scams. Is it a real Xbox Series X | S? Does it work? Is the box filled with a brick, etc. Some sites, like eBay, do offer some customer protection.
    • Pros:
      • Usually available
      • Multiple listings
      • Some free shipping
      • No tax
    • Cons:
      • Price gouging
      • Potential scams
      • Some high shipping costs
      • Potentially dangerous when having to meet in person
  2. Download Apps from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store like LetGo, OfferUp, Mercari, etc. These services are another great place to look but can also be as troublesome. Make sure to check seller ratings and when possible seller’s history. While these are a great resource to locate hard to find items, you’re still subject to the same Pros and Cons as above.
    • Pros:
      • Usually always available
      • Multiple listings
      • Some free shipping
      • No tax
    • Cons:
      • Price gouging
      • Potential scams
      • Sometimes high shipping costs
      • Potentially dangerous when having to meet in person
  3. Stalk popular retailers like Target, Best Buy, GameStop, and Walmart. Checking their websites nightly is generally a good option as some of the online retailer’s inventories get refreshed at night. Sites like Target and Best Buy have the ability to search their in-store availability as well, thus giving the opportunity of an in-store pick-up, or when not available, a first jump in the AM to find an Xbox Series X | S in stock. Of course, this won’t be available until after November 10th but you can and should reach out to the local stores to find out when new pre-orders will be released.
    • Pros:
      • No price gouging
      • Safe purchase
      • Often free shipping or free ship to store pickup
    • Cons:
      • Time-consuming
      • Sometimes shipping if not local
      • Have to pay tax
      • Others will be doing the same
  4. Check unusual retailers like Kohl’s, Micro Center, B&H, BJs, and even Costco. This sounds a little silly, but some of these locations may or may not get any inventory. Perhaps because its hit or miss at these retailers, these stores are often overlooked by buyers and can often yield results on hard to find items like the Xbox Series X | S in stock. It doesn’t hurt to try and/or ask when they are going to get more pre-orders. Usually, a quick online search on their respective sites will give you an idea if the retailer will carry it in-store or online and when they should be available.
    • Pros:
      • Less competition with other buyers
      • No price gouging
      • Safe purchase
    • Cons:
      • Time-consuming
      • Shipping if not local
      • Have to pay tax
  5. Check sites like StockInformer.com and NowInStock.net. These sites are probably the easiest, as they automatically check online stock levels of multiple online sellers like GameStop, Target, Amazon, and even eBay. These sites usually have a notification feature and will notify you via email or text when stock replenishes. Of course, keep in mind, you are not the only one doing this. There are going to be thousands of other people doing the exact same thing, but if you’re able to jump on the notification timely, you may get lucky. Pre-orders are going fast for all these next-gen consoles, you gotta be quick.
    • Pros:
      • The easiest
      • Minimal opportunities for price gouging
      • Minimal opportunities for scams
    • Cons:
      • In competition with thousands of other people
      • Can be disappointing when an item is not available despite getting a notification

These are the methods I generally use when I am looking for any hard-to-get product. We could already judge that pre-orders would be rough given how the PlayStation 5 pre-orders went and now today, how the Xbox Series X | S pre-orders went. Good luck out there and be careful. Be patient and don’t get sucked up in scams but also don’t wait for November 10th Xbox Series X launch.
