During the Game Awards 2020 show yesterday, Turtle Rock Studios and Warner Bros. revealed the cinematic trailer for their upcoming AAA title, Back 4 Blood. If you’re not familiar, Turtle Rock Studios are the folks behind the first-person zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2.
For a number of years, there has been a lot of speculation and rumors that Left 4 Dead 3 was potentially in the works but died after some time. Once Turtle Rock Studios started hiring for a triple-A franchise, the rumor mill started up again only to be finally shot down like a zombie by Turtle Rock Studios. The truth of the matter is, Left 4 Dead 3 was dead when Valve and Turtle Rock Studios parted ways back in 2011. Any idea of the studio working on L4D was also lost as Valve had retained the rights to Left 4 Dead. All was not lost though…
Back in March 2019, the shroud of secrecy had been lifted surrounding this “triple-A franchise” when they announced Back 4 Blood but since then, other than a piece of concept art and some hiring, all has been quiet until now. Back 4 Blood now has an official release date of June 22, 2021, and will be released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam PC.
The trailer gives us a peek into the storyline where after a catastrophic outbreak, most of humanity is either infected by the parasitic Devil Worm or has been killed. Those that survived are known as the Cleaners and have banded together to take on the infected known as the Ridden.
